Time to put down that steak knife. According to research from the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund, colon cancer risk may increase from eating red meat and processed meat. The study suggests that people who eat 24.5 ounces of red meat per week may increase their chances of developing colon cancer by 17 percent compared to those who do not eat red meat. In addition to a healthy diet and exercise, eliminating red and processed meats might prevent thousands of colon cancer cases per year. Limiting foods like red or processed meats, and alcohol, also keeps your digestive system running smoothly.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 150,000 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer and 50,000 people will die from the disease. Colon cancer is the third deadliest form of cancer in the United States. Not only should we take precautions through our diet and lifestyle, but also by getting colon cancer screenings.
